Hello, I’m Robert.
A citizen of both the U.K. and the United States, I live permanently in the world’s greatest city, London.
Professionally, I’ve held various positions in corporate communications and in public health – in New York, Paris, New Delhi and London. Today I serve as Vice President of Corporate Communications & International Government Affairs at American Express. I’m responsible for leading the government relations strategy for the company’s international businesses, and serve as the company’s senior public relations strategist in Europe.
Before joining American Express in 2000, I held various positions at the United Nations Development Programme, including Director of the Asian Regional Programme on HIV/AIDS and Policy Officer in the Bureau of Policy Evaluation. I served previously as Assistant Vice President for Corporate Affairs at L’Oréal and Senior Financial Analyst at Arthur Andersen & Company.
I hold a Master’s degree in International Relations from the University of Cambridge and a Bachelor of Arts in Government from the London School of Economics and Emory University (USA).
I’m also passionate about volunteering and giving back to the community. I’m a member of the Board of Trustees of the Victoria & Albert Museum, the Terrence Higgins Trust (one of the U.K.’s foremost public health charities, and at which I previously served as Chair), and Sadler’s Wells (the U.K.’s leading dance theatre).
I also dabble in writing: my non-fiction book, Law, Ethics and HIV, was first published in 1993 by the UNDP Press, and I’ve written two novels of historical fiction, Closer East and The Darkening Sky, both published by Woodland Free Press.
